About the Film
Pawtucket Rising is the unlikely story of the revitalization of the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
Pawtucket was once a burgeoning mill city. It is the home to the Slater Mill, the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Pawtucket's fortunes fell when the country plummeted into the great depression and it has never fully recovered. When artists could no longer afford the skyrocketing real estate in nearby Providence they were forced to take their business elsewhere. Mayor James E. Doyle recognized that The Arts could be an important catalyst in his city's revitalization. The city seized the opportunity to invite these small businesses to relocate to Pawtucket. As a result, Pawtucket is now restoring and renovating mill and industrial space that had once sat vacant and decaying. The city is experiencing its greatest boom in decades. Pawtucket is rising.
About the filmmaker
Jason Caminiti is an award winning Public Access Television Show host. Born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, Mr. Caminiti is a graduate of Northeastern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. He has produced programs for Public Access in Plymouth and in Fall River, Massachusetts - where he now resides. As a communtiy activist, Mr. Caminiti is involved in several organizations working to revitalize the city of Fall River. He is currently the Co-Chairman of The Lower Highlands Historic Downtown Neighborhood Association, a member of Green Futures and a board member of Arts United. In 2007, Mr. Caminiti began producing films highlighting the culture and history of the Fall River community. It is this work that first brought Pawtucket, Rhode Island to his attention and inspired Pawtucket Rising, his first wide audience feature length documentary film.

are there any thrift stores in newport any more besides friggin "salvation armani"???? i'm not into paying six bucks for used pants.

also, if i get some answers to this post i'd like to put it in the community archives under businesses: thrifts stores, for example.

ps. i remember there is vintage revival (i think is what it's called). i like that place but it's a little out of my price range... so anything that's kind of more thrift, and less consignment boutique, if there is anything like that in newport these days.

Egyptair Flight 990, August Belmont, Hugh D. Auchincloss, All in a Newport Cemetery [12 Dec 2006|11:08pm]

x_posted in mad_jamison

The other day I decided to take a walk in a cemetery that is about a block or two from my house. It was an indescribably rewarding experience. Many of the people buried in this cemetery were historic figures or at least notable in one way or another. By the inscriptions on their memorials some were very highly thought of. I decided to do a web search on some of the names. One such result is behind the tag. More will follow.

Egyptair Flight 990 In Memory of Abbie S. Alger and Oliver H.P. Rose The Izard Family Sacred Memory
Alexander Nesbitt 1901 - 1995 Ann, Sarah, and Henry Anthony Chase John Nelson 1855 - 1930
August Belmont 1816 - 1890 Hugh D. Auchincloss Hugh Dudley Auchincloss - 1897 to 1976 War Veterans

Sad News [02 Nov 2006|08:09pm]

x_posted on newport_native

Sorry about the messed up post! It's now edited and corrected.

How many of you know or remember the local band "No Means Yes" or their lead singer and bass guitarist Mr. Mike. The band moved to Seattle a few years ago because of the favorable climate for grunge rock, and they've been quite successful out there. They recently changed their name to The Very Fine Lines.

On Halloween night they were playing a private gig and during a break a fight broke out. Mr. Mike got stabbed. Yeah. He's ok, except a tendon in his wrist was severed and the doctors say he won't be able to play guitar for at least a year. I spoke to his father this morning, and the family is understandably quite upset, although they are very grateful it wasn't worse.

Mr. Mike's mom is a mail carrier in Newport and she's also my sister, making Mr. Mike my nephew. They tried to persuade him to come home to Newport, but he says he needs to stay out there and deal with this.

Mr. Mike is an awesomely rad dude, and would never hurt anyone. Why do bad things happen to good people?

Do You Sound Like a Rhode Islander? [01 Nov 2006|04:06am]

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

The Midland
The South

180 : home of the half hour burgers. [18 Oct 2006|09:50am]

so here is the scoop on that place 180. they have chef casey who used to be the head chef over at tuckers bistro. and i gotta say they have some slammin soups over there.

but me and my sister went there for burgers the other day, when it was COMPLETELY dead. and we waited over THIRTY MINUTES. so yeah. and they were all dry on top of that. i'm sure it's an okay place but i just had to vent. and the waiter didn't even acknowledge the wait. it was a little absurd.

anyone else have any subpar experiences at 180? or did i hit a bad day?
